Day 1 - Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica

Day 1 - Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica

Today you will leave Canada and arrive to San Jose, upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel for the night.

Day 2 - San Jose to tortuguero

Day 2 - San Jose to Tortuguero

Early this morning you will enjoy the ground transportation from San Jose to Caño Blanco dock. After the arrival at the dock you will board the boat to Tortuguero.

Late lunch will be served at the lodge after the arrival. In the afternoon you will be embarking on a visit to Tortuguero Village. Located in the North East of Costa Rica´s Caribbean Coast, has a population of approximately 1500 residents. For centuries, different groups settle in this part of the country and its surroundings. Today the local community is composed by Afro-Caribbean descendents, immigrants from Limón Port and Nicaragua. Tortuguero National Park is 19,000 hectares and is a key nesting area for leatherback sea turtles, hawksbill sea turtles and loggerhead sea turtles as well. It was declared a national park in 1970 to protect the green turtle population of the world from extinction, this park is also a wildlife sanctuary for monkeys, jaguars, green macaws, tapirs, and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Day 3 - Tortuguero

ct costa-rica-explorer2 thumbTortuguero which means ‘Region of Turtles’ in Spanish is nesting ground for sea turtles every year from March to mid-October. This nesting period known as the arribadas occurs when the moon is fading. Therefore, if you wish to see these turtles nest, it will be after 6:00 pm with a guide, as no one is allowed to explore the beach unaccompanied after this time. A great way to see the turtles nest is from a boat, canoe, or kayak off shore, so as not to disturb the turtles during their nesting or mating period.

Warm, humid and rainy throughout the year, the best time to visit the Parque Nacional Tortuguero is February, April and November, which are the driest months.

Today you will be joining a boat tour through Tortuguero National Park’s canals. This activity will give you the opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna of the area. This system of rivers and man-made channels parallels the coast and cuts through beautiful primary forest.

In the afternoon join your guide in a walk around the lodge and enjoy the hotel facilities or just relax by the pool. (Overnight Tortuguero, B, L, D)

Day 4 - Tortuguero to Monteverde (via San Jose)

This morning you will have a early morning boat transfer to the Tortuguero airstrip to take the domestic flight back to San Jose. Upon arrival, you will be privately transferred to the Monteverde Cloud Forest located in the hills of the Tilaran Mountain range. The afternoon will be for a visit to the hotel surroundings and also to learn about the butterflies and frogs at the Butterfly Garden and the Frog Pond exhibition.

ct costa-rica-explorer3Butterfly Garden: Butterflies are among the most beautiful creatures in the world. In Costa Rica over 14,000 species of butterflies have been identified of which, approximately 750 are found in Monteverde. The visit will give you the opportunity to observe and learn about some of the most beautiful and fascinating insects of the tropics. There are over 40 species of butterflies raised strictly for educational purposes. The Butterfly Garden offers you four gardens simulating different habitats that will show you different species of butterflies found in the country. This Butterfly Garden also has a nature center where the visitor will learn about other species of insects, such as scorpions, tarantulas, walking sticks and more.

The Frog Pond: Frogs and toads are undergoing massive worldwide declines. At the frog pond they are committed to the conservation of amphibians and they dedicate part of the proceeds from each ticket purchased to research and conservation efforts. The Monteverde Frog Pond is run by a team of biologists, naturalists’ guides and conservationists, and is much more than a zoo of amphibians. It provides education and the opportunity to become acquainted with and change our attitudes about these attractive small animals. (Overnight: Monteverde, B)

Day 5 - Monteverde

Your journey today will start with an early transfer to Monteverde Biological Reserve, where you will enjoy a private guided walk through the reserve trails. The reserve offers well-developed and easily negotiable trails access some of the most beautiful cloud forest, anywhere. Often shrouded in cloud blown in from the Atlantic Ocean, the forests of Monteverde are laden with epiphytic growth such as mosses, lichens, ferns, bromeliads, orchids-even small trees! Famous for its populations of Resplendent Quetzal, Monteverde has almost become synonymous with this legendary bird. Other cloud forest denizens include the Black-faced Solitaire, Golden-browed Chlorophonia and Black Guan. Visitation is limited to under 150 persons at one time (distributed on various trails) allowing for a very private connection with the forest.

Afternoon at leisure to enjoy any of the multiple activities offered in the area such as guided walks, horseback riding tours, the canopy tour and more are available at an additional cost. (Overnight: Monteverde, B)

Day 6 - Monteverde

ct costa-rica-explorer6 thumbAfter breakfast you will be picked up at the hotel and transferred to Bajo del Tigre reserve where you will enjoy a privately guided hike. This sector of the Children's Eternal Rain Forest has approximately 29 hectares and offers about 4.4 km of trails that allow you to enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the area. It is located at an altitude that range from 1,020 to 1,380 meters above sea level and receives over 2,400 mm of rain every year.

Day 7 - Monteverde to Arenal

Day 7 - Monteverde to Arenal

In the morning share your time with other Monteverde visitors while you enjoy a pre-scheduled guided tour to Don Juan Coffee Farm. This activity offers an interesting opportunity to learnct costa-rica-explorer7 thumbabout the coffee and Costa Rican folklore. During the coffee tour, participants will learn about the history, cultivation, and operation of a functioning coffee 'beneficio'.

In the afternoon you will be privately transferred (ground and aquatic transportation) to La Fortuna de San Carlos, which is the closest town to the Arenal Volcano. Sitting just north of the Tilaran Mountains, Arenal is a spectacularly beautiful, cone-shaped volcano rising out of the flat San Carlos Plains. It was an active volcano up until Oct.2010 and is currently in its resting stage.

Stay in a beautiful property such as the Arenal Manoa Hotel, to relax and enjoy the marvelous view of Arenal Volcano in Fortuna. Surrounded by gardens, pastures and animals, our rooms have been designed so that each one offers you a panoramic view. (Overnight: Arenal, B)

ct costa-rica-explorer9 thumbAfter breakfast you will be picked up at the hotel for the visit to the Arenal Hanging Bridges, where you will enjoy a natural history walk accompanied by a local bilingual naturalist guide. The project has 3.1 kilometers of hiking trails through spectacular lowland rainforest, and features eight fixed bridges ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges between 48 and 98 meters long. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact, and offering a bird-s eye view of a great diversity of plant and animal life.

In the late afternoon enjoy the thermal pools and some free time at your beautiful hotel. Or enjoy some exciting “zip-lining” through the jungle (optional)! (Overnight: Arenal, B, D)

After an early breakfast you will be picked up at the hotel for your private tour to Rio Celeste (Light Blue River) at the Tenorio Volcano. Mysterious and imposing, the union of the Buena Vista and Roble Rivers run into a sky bluect costa-rica-explorer11 thumb stream, giving birth to one of the most extraordinary phenomenon’s of nature: Rio Celeste River. The tour leaves the hotel at 7:00 am returns at 5:00 pm. This very demanding hike requires good physical condition from the participants. The first 2 hours of hike takes you thru primary forest also some hot springs that would prepare you for the hike back, animals and birds are often spotted in the trails. (Overnight: Arenal, B, L)
