Karen and Katie in Kenya - Blog

Karen and Katie leave for a familiarization trip to Kenya tomorrow and they'll be keeping a blog of their adventures. Follow their travels here

Antarctica by Andrew De Angelis

After 3 days crossing the Drake passage, we made it to the seventh continent. I was about to start a new adventure in the majestic Antarctic.

Kayaking in the bay was very exciting; being there, immersed in the silence, just you and Mother Nature all around. We watched as seals swam by and penguins jumped out of the water to appease their curiosity. Leopard seals and albatross were everywhere.

Large chunks of ice made the paddling difficult and the abundant wildlife viewing slowed our kayaking team. Then we spotted humpbacks! Being alone in the kayak with this gentle monster close by gave me a boost of adrenaline and made the whole kayaking experience even more exciting and well worth taking the kayaks out.

One morning I woke up believing that a strong wind was blowing outside. I opened the window but it wasn’t the wind. There were hundreds of Humpbacks surrounding our boat. As far as you could see there were whales and flukes.

I will never forget that day, it was snowing with poor visibility and after kayaking all day we were ready to return to the ship. Suddenly, two humpbacks approached us and started putting on a show. They both flipped upside down, showing their bellies. In a matter of seconds, one of them was under our zodiac. We heard the sound of the animal pushing us from underneath... boom boom boom. The whale was content with its belly rub and continued on its merry way.

It was the most exciting, wildest and closest encounter I have ever had. If you like whales spending a week in March in the Antarctica will not disappoint!!

Thanks to One Ocean Expeditions and Civilized Adventures for this experience of a lifetime!!

Africa Selling Fast, into 2018

We've been experiencing tremendous demand for Africa safaris for 2017 and well into 2018. Many of our favorite camps and boutique properties are quite small, with as few as 3 or 4 tents in a camp so it doesn't take much for them to fill up. Many are actually sold out for the Christmas/New Years' 2017 time frame.

If you're keen to go on safari this year or next, please give us a call so we can help you start planning now. Our expert team is always ready to help you!

What's Up in 2017

Welcome to 2017! We have some great small-group adventures planned, starting with the ECUADOR SPRING BREAK trip. This is a "guaranteed departure": we have blocked space on one of our favorite Galapagos yachts, and we have some spots available with savings of US$ 1,075 per person. Designed to fit in with most secondary school Spring Breaks in Calgary, the trip spends 2 nights in Quito, 4 nights in the Galapagos and 2 nights in Otavalo. Stay in a converted mansion, a first-class yacht, and a historic hacienda! This trip is suitable for singles, couples - not just families with kids.

Denell Falk, President of Civilized Adventures, will host several small-group trips in 2017, including inaugural trips to ICELAND (June 4 departure; space is very limited), MONGOLIA, and UZBEKISTAN. Mongolia and Uzbekistan trips depart in September; they can be combined for a savings of US$ 250 per person. Denell also hosts a trip in October that showcases two gems of Asia: MYANMAR & CAMBODIA

ZIMBABWE & BOTSWANA offer amazing wildlife viewing experiences. If you have dreamt of a great safari, our September trip led by specialist guide Travis Steffens is highly recommended. Many of you will know of Brian Keating; Travis was inspired to study primates as a student of Brian's at the U of C. Now over a decade later, Travis has spent years in Madagascar studying lemurs (he will soon gain PHd status), and during this time he has led many safaris in southern Africa. He's dedicated, knowledgable, and extremely personable and we're sure you'll enjoy a great safari experience with him. Space is quite limited on this "guaranteed departure" where we have booked intimate safari camps in top wildlife viewing locations.

Our small-group safari to KENYA & TANZANIA starts on Sept. 11. This classic safari takes in the Serengeti and the Masai Mara at a time when the migration is at its height. Our top safari guides will take care of the group. Special activities - beyond wildlife viewing - include learning more about the programs and efforts behind saving endangered rhinos in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Our "CUSTOM team" has been extraordinarily busy this past year working closely with our clients to create personalized journeys even into 2018. Favorite destinations include Peru & Machu Picchu, Ecuador & the Galapagos, Argentina & Chile (Easter Island, Patagonia, winelands), Costa Rica, Italy, Spain & France; and Asian gems like Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and India. We've seen increased interest in river cruises, from the Amazon and great rivers of Europe to the Mekong, and cruises on small and medium sized ships. Expedition cruises to the Antarctic, the Arctic, Alaska, the Baja and even Hawaii continue to be popular.

If you're keen to travel in 2017 and onward, please give us a call. Our expert team is confident that we can help you with your travel dreams.

Travel Series Event a Great Success

Last Wednesday, Oct. 8, Civilized Adventures hosted a fun and informative evening with our special guest speakers who presented a selection of inspiring travel ideas. We enjoyed wonderful images and video on Explora lodges and the Australis cruise in South America, various stops in Australia & New Zealand as well as Civilized Adventures hosted journeys (Spain, Portugal, Iceland, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe & Botswana). We wrapped up the evening going around the world through the eyes of Brian Keating, who shared clips from his awe-inspiring travels.

We promised that proceeds would assist the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, and we are proud to share that CA$1,500 was raised. Thank you to all who attended!

We hope you were inspired with new travel ideas. We look forward to hearing from you when it comes time for us to help you with your next great adventure.
