Glenn Hawley

Glenn Hawley became an amateur astronomer on February 26, 1979, when he observed his first total solar eclipse from Hecla Island north of Winnipeg. Since then he has seen 10 other total eclipses in Mexico, Chile, India, CuraƧao, Turkey, Zambia, and China plus while co-hosting tours to eclipses in South Africa, Turkey (again), China (twice). He also co-hosted an RASC trip to witness a rare transit of Venus from Egypt. Glenn has twice been President of the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, is the current national Vice President, as well as a member of th Calgary Centre Council since 1987, and is a regular observer at Star Parties in Alberta, Saskatchewan, B.C., and Texas.

Glenn regularly co-hosts RASC "Starfaris" with Don Hladiuk. Together, they share their experience in travel and viewing celestial events with their fellow travellers, many of whom are themselves experiences sky-watchers. We always ensure that back-up transportation is available on viewing day and if the need arises, Don and Glenn will take action to move the group on eclipse day in order to find clear skies. In China in 2008 this meant driving to a point close to the Mongolian border. In 2009 it meant driving through torrential rain to find a clear spot. Who knows what may happen in Australia in 2012!

Next up: An RASC Starfari travels to Australia in November, 2012.
