Brief Itinerary

Days 1, 2 & 3 - BEIJING (2B, 2L, 2D): Meet and greet by your guide and transfer to your hotel, viewing Olympic sites on the way. Over the next 2 days sites visited include: Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Explore the lanes and alleys of “old” Beijing by cyclo-rickshaw, ending with lunch as guests of a local family.

Day 4 - CHENGDE (1B, 1L, 1D): Drive to the Great Wall and continue to Chengde (250km from Beijing), once the summer home to the Kangxi Emperor (1703), the longest reigning Emperor in Chinese history.

Day 5 - CHENGDE & BEIJING (B, L): Unique sites in Chengde include the Emperor’s Summer Resort with the ornate Puning temple. On a hillside lies a temple built to resemble the Potala Palace in Lhasa (Putuozongchgne Zhi Miao). Many sites have Tibetan Buddhist designs where were said to make the Mongol allies feel at home. After lunch, drive back to Beijing.

Days 6 & 7 - DATONG (2B, 1L, 2D): Take the day train -basic services - to Datong (265km) near the southern reaches of Inner Mongolia. See the amazing Yungang Caves that are carved into sandstone cliffs - one of China’s most celebrated accomplishments of Buddhist art, with some 51,000 statues.

Days 8 & 9 - PINGYAO (2B, 2L, 2D): See the spectacular Hanging Temple, carved into a canyon on one of China’s five sacred Daoist mountains. Continue the drive to Pingyao, a trove of Ming and Qing architecture and surrounded by an intact Ming city wall. Spend all of Day 9 exploring historic houses, shops and temples of this intact ancient city.

Days 10 & 11 - XI’AN (2B, 2L, 1D): Drive to Taiyuan (via the Wooden Pagoda) then fly to Xi’an. See the Terra Cotta Warriors and the ancient City Wall with option to cycle on the wall.

Days 12 & 13 - SHANGHAI (2B): Fly to Shanghai and transfer to your hotel. Day 13 is for your own explorations in this intriguing city.

Day 14 - HOMEWARD (B): Transfer to the airport or extend your journey.
