Malawi & South Luangwa
(11 days)

Tour Overview

Malawi is often billed as "the warm heart of Africa". Not only do her people add to the experience of being here, but so to does Malawi's natural beauty. Malawi is a nature lovers haven. It is a country that follows the curve of Lake Malawi at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is the ninth largest in the world at 560km long, 80km wide and 700m deep! As a fresh water lake it contains a greater variety of indigenous species of fish than any other and over 500 species of brightly coloured and patterned cichlid fish that are not found anywhere else in the world call the lake home. It is sometimes known as the Calendar Lake because it is approximately 365 miles long and 52 miles wide!

Before heading tovvthe relaxing beaches and waters of Lake Malawi at Makakola, we start in Lilongwe and its nature sanctuary before making our way to the extraordinary Zomba Plateau. Zomba stands like a sentinel over the Shire lowlands and has the most outstanding views of Africa stretching far into the distant horizons.

After our time on the shores of "thevCalendar Lake", we make our way over to Zambia's South Luangwa National Park. With over a third of the country devoted to conservation, Zambia has arguably some of the best wildlife and wilderness areas in Africa, yet is still a relatively undiscovered destination. Zambia is now gaining a reputation for its high concentrations of wildlife in some scenically stunning reserves. Located in the southern reaches of the Great Rift Valley, South Luangwa is regarded as one of the world's most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries and is probably Africa's finest park for walking safaris. Accommodation is in mid-range lodges and hotels.
