Spain: Camino de Santiago

Spain: Camino de Santiago
(12 days)

Tour Overview

This relaxed walking tour follows in the footsteps of pilgrims from all over Europe who, since the 9th century, have been making their way to the tomb of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela. Our trail takes us across the northern reaches of Spain's Galicia region, through a spectacular wealth of natural and cultural treasures. We focus on the last and best part of the Camino, between Burgos and Santiago, passing through rich pasture land in the high plains of the Castilian Meseta and into the hills and mountains of Galicia. We visit the historical towns of Burgos, Leon and Astorga, important pilgrim centres in their own right and repositories of some of Northern Europe's finest architectural gems. We visit the great Gothic cathedrals of Burgos and Leon and the unique Palacio Episcopal in Astorga, before continuing along some of the most scenic terrain that this pilgrim trail can offer.

Our daily walking and cultural highlights balance each other out perfectly as we cross the high plateaus to the mountains of Galicia. In Las Medulas we have time to enjoy a day exploring the surreal landscape of the former Roman gold mines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before following the Valcarce Valley to the unusual village of O Cebreiro. From here we journey through the unspoilt Camino, passing isolated villages and ancient forests of oak and chestnut, towards our journey's end. Finally we arrive in Santiago de Compostela, where we visit the magnificent Cathedral and allow ourselves a day to explore fully this most lovely of cities. We will be accompanied on our journey by a bus, which will carry our main luggage between nightstops, leaving us free to explore this most beguiling of landscapes unhindered except for our daysacs.
