Czech Republic and Germany

Czech Republic and Germany:
Prague, Saxony, and the Elbe
(8 days)

Tour Overview

The lands of Bohemia and Saxony have long captivated the imagination of writers and artists alike with their magnificent scenery, historic towns and dark myths and legends. Our short cycling tour takes us on a journey through this ancient landscape, discovering hidden treasures as we follow the Vltava and Elbe Rivers, as they carve their way through the basalt hills of the Czech Republic, into the sandstone canyons of "Saxon Switzerland".

Both the beginning and end of our journey are based in the stunning Czech capital of Prague, without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a vibrant and eclectic mix of architecture and art. We have some time to explore a little of this magnificent city on arrival, before we begin our journey along the Vitava, through the "Garden of Bohemia", a landscape of rolling hills and vineyards, to Melnik. Then, joining the Elbe, we visit the infamous fortress town of Terezin and the baroque town of Litomerice, before entering a region of narrow valleys and steep verdant hills on the way to Strekov Castle, an inspiration to Richard Wagner.

Further north we enter the almost surreal world of "Saxon Switzerland", with its bizarre rock formations and breathtaking landscapes. Here we see the fortress of Konigstein, and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding country. Entering Dresden, the great Saxon capital we head for the heart of the old city and see for ourselves why this city once boasted the title of the "Florence of the North". Then it is on to Meissen, a spectacularly preserved cathedral town famous for its pottery and the end of our two-wheeled journey. Here we can bask in the late afternoon sun, enjoying a welldeserved glass of the locally produced wine, before we return to Prague and a chance to enjoy a guided tour of the city of 100 spires.

We have graded the tour easy – 229km/5 days (average 45.8km/cycling day). We use 21 gear 'Unibike' touring bikes with a rear pannier for carrying day things. Cycling is mostly on the flat or downhill though there are several short uphill sections, generally when ascending out of river valleys 70% asphalt, 30% well maintained gravel lanes. Much of the cycling is on dedicated cycle paths.
